How we use cookies

How we use cookies

A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer's hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your preferences.

We use traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps us analyse data about web page traffic and improve our website in order to tailor it to customer needs.

By enabling us to monitor which pages you find useful and which you do not, we can use the data to improve your experience on our website, and we may customise pages that may be of interest to you. A cookie in no way gives us access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with us. You can choose to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. This may prevent you from taking full advantage of the website.

These are cookies that are required for the operation of our website.

They allow us to recognise and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around our website when they are using it. This helps us to improve the way our website works, for example, by ensuring that users are finding what they are looking for easily.

These are used to recognise you when you return to our website and to remember settings to help improve your visit.

These cookies record your visit to our website, the pages you have visited and the links you have followed.   These are linked to services provided by third parties, such as ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ buttons.  The third party often provides these services in return for recognising that you have visited our website.

Please note that third parties (including, for example, advertising networks and providers of external services like web traffic analysis services) may also use cookies, over which we have no control. These cookies are likely to be analytical/performance cookies or targeting cookies.

Our site also includes embedded ‘share’ buttons to enable users of the site to easily share articles through a number of popular social networks, for example, Facebook or Twitter. These websites may set a cookie if you click through. We do not control the dissemination of these cookies and you should check the relevant third-party website for more information about these.

A list of third-party cookies is as follows (Please note we are not responsible for the content hosted on third party sites listed below).

We use Hotjar in order to better understand our users’ needs and to optimize our website experience. Hotjar is a technology service that helps us better understand our users’ experience (e.g. how much time they spend on which pages, which links they choose to click, what users do and don’t like, etc.) and this enables us to build and maintain our service with user feedback. Hotjar uses cookies and other technologies to collect data on our users’ behaviour and their devices. This includes a device's IP address (processed during your session and stored in a de-identified form), device screen size, device type (unique device identifiers), browser information, geographic location (country only), and the preferred language used to display our website. Hotjar stores this information on our behalf in a pseudonymised user profile. Hotjar is contractually forbidden to sell any of the data collected on our behalf.

When the Hotjar script executes we try to determine the most generic cookie path we should use, instead of the page hostname. This is done so that cookies can be shared across subdomains (where applicable). To determine this, we try to store the _hjTLDTest cookie for different URL substring alternatives until it fails. After this check, the cookie is removed.
